PHOENIX -- As if the Arizona Coyotes have not gone through enough this season ...Arizona lost its fourth straight game Thursday and also lost key contributor Brad Richardson for an extended period when he suffered a two broken bones in his right leg in a 3-2 overtime loss at Vancouver on Thursday.San Jose, meanwhile, looks to finish a six-game road trip on a high note when it visits the Coyotes on Saturday at Gila River Arena. At the least, the Coyotes are expected to start No. 1 goaltender Mike Smith, who made his first appearance in a month in a 2-1 overtime loss at Calgary on Wednesday. Smith had not played since suffering a lower-body injury early in a 7-4 loss at Ottawa in the second game of the season Oct. 18.San Jose (9-8) is three points behind Pacific Division-leading Anaheim. The Sharks lost to Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup Finals last year. The Coyotes (5-9-2) have 12 points, the fewest in the league, although they have played two fewer games than all but one of the teams in the Pacific. The Sharks are 3-2 on the trip but have lost the last two games while scoring only two goals. They were 0-for-6 on the power play in a 3-2 loss at St. Louis on Thursday.Weve got to find a way to cash in when we get the chance, coach Pete DeBoer said.San Jose will be without center Tomas Hertl, who suffered a lower body injury against St. Louis and returned to the Bay Area for further evaluation Friday.Defenseman Brett Burns leads the Sharks with six goals and is tied with center Joe Pavelski for the team lead with 14 points. Pavelski has five goals and center Logan Couture has four.Sometimes it feels like were forcing plays through bodies, through sticks, Couture said. Other times if feels like were not shooting the puck, not getting motion toward the net, not getting second and third opportunities. Feels like were one shot and out, which isnt us. We usually shoot the puck, get it back, shoot it again.Richardson suffered fractures to his right tibia and right fibula in a collision with Vancouver defenseman Nikita Tryamkin midway through the second period Thursday in the loss to the Canucks.Richardson, who scored his fifth goal of the season as the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead, underwent surgery in Vancouver on Friday morning and was stabilized, the Coyotes said.Hes a real heart-and-soul player, Arizona coach Dave Tippett told the teams website. Were thin at center ice and we lose a key guy there, it takes a toll on us.The Coyotes did not announce a timetable for Richardsons return, but it appears his second season with the team is in jeopardy.Richardson, 31, is tied for second on the team in goals and tied for third with nine points. He is in the second year of a three-year, $6.25 million contract, and was signed as a free agent to add a veteran presence to a young team. He had 11 goals and a career-high 31 points last season, his 11th in the league. In his absence, young centers Christian Dvorak and Dylan Strome could receive more playing time. Strome, 19, was the Coyotes first-round pick in the 2015 draft, the third player taken overall. He played Thursday after missing the previous four games a healthy scratch.Center Martin Hanzal, an unrestricted free agent next spring, had been mentioned in trade rumors, but it appears he is less likely to be moved now, if the Coyotes had ever considered a deal in the first place. Hanzal recently returned after missing five games with a lower body injury.Coyotes wing Shane Doan, who played on Richardsons line, had his 553rd assist on Richardsons goal Thursday, tying Thomas Steen for first place on the franchise list.Nike React Element 87 Trainer . -- Peyton Manning will have all of his wide receivers available for the first time in a month when the Denver Broncos begin their playoff run Jan. The Predators Get: D Michael Del Zotto.SUNRISE, Fla. -- When the New York Islanders visit the Florida Panthers on Saturday night at the BB&T Center, it will be a rematch of last seasons first-round playoff series. The Islanders won that series in six games, extinguishing a Panthers season that had seen Florida claim the Atlantic Division for the first time after winning a franchise-record 47 games. Both teams topped 100 points last season. Both entered this season as Stanley Cup contenders with odds floating between 21-1 (Panthers) and 23-1 (Islanders). But so far this season, neither team is doing very well. Florida (6-7-1) is in last place in the Atlantic. New York (5-7-2) is next-to-last in the Metropolitan Division. There are 16 teams in the Eastern Conference, all battling for eight playoff spots, and the Panthers and Islanders are each digging themselves a hole. After losing a home game 4-2 to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, Florida coach Gerard Gallant intimated that his team is close to regaining its 2015-2016 form.I like the way weve played most of our games, Gallant said. But if you look at the San Jose game, three mistakes, and they are in the back of our net.The fourth Sharks goal was an empty-netter, but the message was clear: The Panthers need to focus for the full 60 minutes and beyond in case of overtime.Florida did get some help on the injury front on Thursday with the return of left winger Jussi Jokinen. Center Nick Bjugstad should return next week. The Panthers are expected to start Roberto Luongo in goal against New York. Backup James Reimer, who took the loss against the Sharks on Thursday, started three of the past six games -- a heavier work load than expected.Meanwhile, the Islanders never led in Thursdays 4-1 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning. New York fell behind 3-0 before Andrew Ladd scored the only goal for New York, which was penaalized six times and beaten twice on Lightning power plays.dddddddddddd.We thought we created some chances and did some good things 5-on-5, Ladd told the media on Thursday. But it is tough when you are in the penalty box all night.Only five NHL teams have committed more penalties than the Islanders entering Friday. The Islanders have committed 68 penalties this season. The Panthers, by contrast, have been caught just 52 times. Only four teams have less penalty minutes per game than the Panthers.Besides the concern on penalties, the Islanders are also dealing with another ugly trend -- they are 0-4-0 on the road this season.Jaroslav Halak started in goal for New York on THursday but was pulled after making only 13 saves on 16 shots on goal. Goalie Thomas Greiss entered the game at 2:50 in the second period and allowed only one goal the rest of the way.Islanders coach Jack Capuano and star center John Tavares are both concerned with the penalties, especially since New York had just one power play on its side on Thursday. There were a couple of calls that were real questionable, Capuano said. We played pretty tough 5-on-5. We have to find a way to kill penalties.Unfortunately for the Islanders, only three teams are having less success than New York on the penalty kill. The Islanders are tied for 26th place with a 75.9 percentage.Tavares and other Islanders made the point that when so many penalties are called, it puts New Yorks penalty-killers on the ice for extended periods. Some of the skilled scorers who are not on the PK units can get cold and out of sorts. Its no secret, Tavares said. The amount of penalties were taking is putting us in a tough spot to climb out of holes and into games. ' ' '
