FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Quick.Who are all the tight ends on the Buffalo Bills? In his first week with the Patriots in 2009, Rob Ninkovich was stumped when Bill Belichick surprised him with that question.Afterward, he came up to me and he said, You should also know their shoe size, the defensive end said. So from then on I made sure I knew every single tight end. Couldnt find the shoe size, but I was trying. His coachs pop quizzes — in team meetings, passing players in the hallway or anywhere they meet — can be a source of fear. And that makes them study and so theyll be better prepared for the next game.I think that puts us all on edge, special teams captain Matthew Slater said. Its not about embarrassing a guy. Its not about putting a guy on the spot. Its about us being prepared and being ready to go on Sunday. They better have the answers for the final test on Feb. 1 in the Super Bowl against the defending champion Seattle Seahawks in Glendale, Arizona.Professor Belichick questions both veteran stars and young backups. Sometimes hell ask one player if anothers answer is correct.Hearts pounding, palms are sweating, running back Shane Vereen said of younger players reactions. What might an opposing defence do against a certain formation at a particular spot on the field? What about that new play coaches added the previous day?Weve all gotten caught, safety Devin McCourty said. Some of the questions he asks you, you dont even think about it. I mean it usually results in us being very prepared at the end of the week.Belichick might be an odd choice to go all Alex Trebek on his players. The coach with all the questions is known for giving non-answers to reporters. Were on to Cincinnati, he said repeatedly after being asked about the teams problems following a 41-14 loss to Kansas City one week before playing the Bengals. On Thursday, he said, I dont have an explanation for the Patriots use of underinflated balls in last Sunday nights 45-7 AFC championship game win over Indianapolis. But his players, like school children crouching in their seats hoping not to be called on, know Belichicks surprise quizzes can keep them from being surprised in games. He actually did catch me in the hallway when I was a rookie and he asked me a question a couple of years ago about a play, third-year linebacker Donta Hightower said. Apparently it was a big play by a big player and I didnt get it. Its kind of frowned upon by all the other guys, so I learned my lesson then. For all his obsession with preparation, Belichick knows there are limits. He recently paraphrased former President and five-star general Dwight D. Eisenhower while meeting with reporters.Preparation is everything until the battle starts, and then it doesnt mean anything, Belichick said. Then you react to what happens in the game. In his case, what happens in the battle. So if the Patriots have never seen the opponents first five plays, they fall back on fundamentals such as tackling, covering a receiver or filling a gap, McCourty said. That will never steer you wrong, he said. Its not the same as a battle. Those guys lives are at stake. The Patriots are preparing for their sixth Super Bowl in 14 years, all under Belichick. Theyve won three of them.Bill knows everything about a team, from personnel to the coaching staff, the players, everything, McCourty said. By the end of the week, we usually know it, too.Now they have more than a week to study, practice, and, perhaps, try to avoid Belichicks questions. They havent been strange. They just catch you off guard, wide receiver Brandon LaFell said. Its usually, What did we put in the game plan overnight on Tuesday, just to see if you looked at the game plan. And what if you dont answer correctly?Youve got to, LaFell said, or youll have those questions every day.___NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLJake Bauers Jersey .Y. -- The New York Islanders were seeking a positive finish to a frustrating season on home ice. Gustafsson (16-3) evaded well to start, avoiding any of his opponents heavy power shots. But after Gustafsson inadvertently poked his foes right eye, everything changed. After being given a brief timeout, Johnson pressed forward and immediately scored with a devastating right hand that sent Gustafsson to his knees. As the lanky Swede tried desperately to regain his footing, Johnson unleashed a vicious barrage of punches that left Gustafsson unable to recover. Referee Marc Goddard gave Gustafsson every possible chance to recover in front of his home audience, but the fight was ultimately waved off at the 2:15 mark of the first frame.Jon Jones, I hope you get well brother, Johnson said after the win. Lets get this championship on and make the crowd excited about this.In the nights co-feature, top middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi (36-5-2) earned a quick, albeit somewhat controversial, TKO win over former Strikeforce and PRIDE champion Dan Henderson (30-13).Mousasi, 15 years younger than his opponent, looked to be the quicker fighter to start, and he used a long jab to establish range early. His speed advantage was evident to start, and it was obvious Henderson was going to need to rely on his powerful right hand to win the fight. Unfortunately for him, when he threw hit, Mousasi slipped the punch and countered with a right hand to the top of the head that sent Henderson wobbling to the canvas.Mousasi followed and, though he didnt land any clean shots once the fight was on the floor, referee Leon Roberts decided Henderson had seen enough and halted the bout. Not fully aware of his surroundings, Henderson wound up wresstling the referee, seeming to support the officials call.dddddddddddd However, the crowd vehemently protested the end.I thought it was a good stoppage, Mousasi said after the win. Right when he went down, I would have been able to put another punch in it, but I didnt because I thought the referee would stop it. And then I thought, Well, maybe they arent going to stop it, so I kept punching afterwards. So I think it was a good stoppage. In a key light heavyweight contest, Ryan Bader (19-4) earned a hard-fought split-decision win over fellow wrestling standout Phil Davis (13-3).Neither fighter was able to really establish much momentum in the contest, with Davis trying to stay at distance other than nine missed takedown attempts in the 15-minute affair. Meanwhile, Bader preferred a boxing attack, but he seldom was able to put together extended strings of attacks. A restless crowd booed the frequent stalemates, and judges werent given much to score, but two of the three judges ruled in Baders favour, and he was awarded a split-decision victory. It was a split decision, but I walked out with a win, so Im happy, Bader said after the fight. Performance-wise, I felt like I was a bit sloppy at times. Hes obviously a really good wrestler. His standup is just sporadic. At the end of the day, I came out of there with a win and I got the job done.In the nights first main-card matchup, featherweight Sam Sicilia (14-5) scored a devastating first-round knockout of Swedish fighter Akira Corassani (12-6).Corassani was moving well to start the fight, shifting laterally on the outside and darting in and out of range. But as he started to open up on the feet, Sicilia clipped him with a devastating overhand right that sent Corassani crashing to the floor. Sicilia followed with more punches, but the bout was already over at the 3:26 mark of the first round.Thats the most comfortable Ive ever felt in the octagon, Sicilia said after the win. I really felt I had it together this time. The crowd was giving me high fives on the way out. They just wanted to see a good fight, so it was really cool. ' ' '
